The reliance on electricity in every
modern home has lead to a somewhat problematic situation of having
cables going through the ground to every home that's connected to the
centralized power grid. Which means, everytime there is a problem
with the power or there is need for a new building to be constructed,
the area must first be checked for every cable that might be
underground. This is done with a specialized piece of kit called the
cable locator, which has become mandatory equipment for most large
scale construction companies and electrical technicians.
Your standard cable locator, as the
name would suggest is used for underground cable locating which is
doen through a fairly simple process. There are three main components
of a cable locator the transmitter which is a seperate part, a
reciever and the battery which are housed in the portable kit that is
used for exact location. There are two ways to use this kit and they
are passive and active loaction, of which active is the more accurate
method while passive is the independent method.
Active location is done by connecting
the cable to the transmitter which then sends specific frequencies
through the cable which then bounces through the ground to the
reciever which then detects the electromagnetic field created by the
transmitted signal around the cable. The recieved signal is then
transfered into data which the operator using it can then read and
know the exact location of the cable based on the data being sent to
the display attached to the top of the reciever.
Considering the need for underground cable locating a decent cable locator isn't hard to come by because
where there is demand there is supply. Your standard cable locator
these days has many features that make it more convenient than
digging around looking for the cable's path underground. Features
such as different frequencies, compases and data logging which makes
them more comfortable to use and easier to read and map out the
cable's path to ensure that the new structure doesn't cause damage
to an older home which is connected to the cable you need to find.
Cable location is the first process of
starting any new construction project since the plumbing and cable
placement requires the ground to be dug up. Once the process of
location is finished every other part of the construction process
would be easier and safer.
