Fundamental Reasons To Wear Safety Hard Hats

Safety is an important issue in any work site. And when it comes to safety, personal protective equipment – of all types - is the key to keep you and your workers out of harm. The more prepared you and your workers are, the less are the chances for accidents and injuries.

Safety hard hats play a crucial role in protecting workers. A serious head injury may change the most cherished things in a person's life – play, work, family and home can be changed forever.

In the past, safety hard hats weren't very hard and were constructed from steamed canvas, glue and black paint. As the time pass, aluminum became a standard material for hard hats, except in electrical applications. It was in the 1940's when fiberglass became the most common material of hard hats. A decade later, thermoplastic materials took place over fiberglass for been easy to mold and shape.

Nowadays, a material called High-Density Polyethylene is used to make safety hard hats. Some types of hard hat are even required to feature a foam inner liner of Expanded Polystyrene, for extra comfort and safety.

Here are fundamental reasons to wear safety hard hats:
  • Hard hats resist penetration by objects.
  • Hard hats absorb the shock of a blow.
  • Hard hats are water-resistant and slow burning.
  • Hard hats protect workers in case they bump their heads against equipment and fixed objects.
  • Hard hats protect workers from falling objects.
  • Hard hats will protect workers if heavy equipment bumps into them.
  • When worn correctly, a hard had can protect the workers head in case of a fall.
  • A worker wearing a hard hat has better chances of survival in powered industrial truck accidents.
  • Hard hats make workers more visible at day and night.
  • Wide brim hard hats provide more sun protection for workers.
  • Nowadays, more and more work sites are requiring contractors to wear hard hats on their jobs.

Safety hard hats must feature a strong outer shell and a shock-absorbing lining that includes a headband and straps that suspend the shell from 2.5 to 3.20 cm away from the head. This type of hard hat design provide ventilation during normal wear and shock absorption during an impact. And unless you have the manufacturers written approval, never wear your hard hat backwards.
