In modern society wherever
you look around you there will always be wires connecting a power
source to an electrical appliance of some kind. But what about the
power source, it can be something nearby or an electrical plant that
is hundreds of kilometers away. The cable that connects yours and
every other home nearby is placed underground to avoid any potential
damage that it might sustain on the surface, but even those cables
sometimes break because of one factor or another and they need to be
replaced or repaired, this is where the cable locator comes in.
A cable locator is a transmitter (which induces a signal) and receiver (it receives the signal) kit which can be used in two methods to locate underground utility and telecommunications lines. Commonly used by construction companies and electricians to locate cables underground either to avoid digging it up or specifically to find the cable and repair it. This is done through two methods active and passive detection, and most of the cable locators for sale on the current market can use both methods.
Active location is the
primary method you'll want to use since it gives the most accurate
map of where the cable is. The transmitter is connected to the cable
directly, it sends a signal at specific frequencies, it can also be
done without a direct connection but you'll need the approximate
location of the cable to do it. While passive involves sweeping the
area looking for unknown lines, namely the operator scans the area
looking for utilities that radiate or re-radiate frequencies back to
the receiver.
Most cable locators forsale in the Australian market meet the standard for user-friendliness
and are portable and can be used in many different environments. Most
of them feature different active and passive frequencies, and a
current measurement system which will show the amperage of the cable
underground. Other note-worthy features common in most cable locators
is the ability to data log the scanning process and create a GPS map
of all the cables it finds underground (similarly to a ground
penetrating radar system).
To conclude the cable
locator is a necessary device that is used to find cables
underground, it serves as an essential tool in the arsenal of
electricians and construction workers alike. The technology behind it
is somewhat sophisticated but it's user-friendliness allows it to be
used by any worker with minimal training.
