An Introductions to Spill Containment Kits


Chemical spills pose a health and safety risk to both the employees and the surrounding community. The reason for this is that if they are not handled correctly, they can easily become a major liability for a company when it comes to the regulatory fines, even the possibility of litigation is not excluded. That being said, it is pivotal for a company to be able to deal with workplace spills quickly and effectively and that's when spill containment kits come into play. 



These kits are essentially a combination of various spill response products. The products are assembled together already and all you need to do is store them in various locations in your facility so they can be readily available. There are different types of spills that might occur can, mostly depending on the substances in your facility, however, here are the products most commonly included in spill containment kits:

Booms or Socks - These are made of highly absorbent materials designed to absorb spills and prevent them from spreading. When in use, they ought to be positioned directly in front of the spill as to avoid its spreading.

Absorbent Pads - These are meant to be placed directly on the area of the spill.

Safety Gloves - These are mandatory when handling spill response products. Apart from gloves, spill kits should include the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) depending on the type of spill they are intended for.

Sorbent or Floor Sweep – These items are used for absorbing and encapsulating spills. Usually used for removing hydrocarbons from hard surfaces which are know to leave residue.

Disposal Bags – These are puncture, tear and leak proof bags. They are used for safe disposal of the contaminants.

When a spill occurs, time is of the essence and the convenience of being able to quickly grab the kit can eliminate a lot of trouble. That is why workers should be able to locate a spill kit in the facility and they should be familiar with the instructions regarding how to use everything. There are several different designs of spill kits, for example, there are those that can be hung up on the wall, but also spill kits that are designed to be housed in a wheeled bin or a a duffel bag for convenient transportation. Lastly, spill kits can also be cost-effective since purchasing the items separately costs a lot more that having everything conveniently arranged for you. to create a kit from scratch can be a costly venture.
