Pumps: Things to Know when Purchasing

Any home needs to be equipped with the right set of tools and machinery even if you're not exactly into repairs or DIY because it's a matter of efficiency, time and money saving.

Let me explain it with the example of water pumps, as the hydraulic machines they are essential for the simplest of tasks, like watering your yard, to emergencies like draining flooded rooms or putting fires out. As necessary as they are for a household, since there's a wide range of options, it's important to choose wisely based on certain aspects.

Starting from the flood versus fire distinction, a pump specialised for floods isn't the same as the pump for fires; the first one is a water transfer pump, and the latter high pressure pump. Additionally, each can provide more benefits for other tasks.
For instance, transfer water pumps can be used for draining out hot tubs, pools or ponds, as well as lawn sprinkling, whereas high pressure are ideal for hobby farming because of their ability to move water over great distances.
Apart from these two, there's the pump that's ideal for passing solids without the fear you'd ruin them if debris passes through, like the semi-solid and trash pump. In the case of vacuum there are vacuum oil and suction pumps that are used in engineering and industrial production but can also serve well for home air conditioning repairs.
Other than choosing based on your requirements in terms of the tasks you intend to use a pump for, it's advisable to become acquainted with some basic pump terminology.
The PSI (pounds per square inch) is a unit of pressure and head, and along with the flow rate measured in GPM (gallons per minute) they are the aspects you have to consider when purchasing your pump.
The maximum head and pressure of a pump refer to how far the pump can pump water, and at which height, while the flow rate shows how effective a pump is based on the amount of water it can pump in a minute.
Along with choosing the brand, to have some notion of the quality of the engine and its size based on the CC (cubic centimeters), it's recommended to consider the power source too, whether you'd go for electric, diesel or petrol powered.
Though ideal for the small tasks, the electric are great for bigger tasks too, especially because they don't make much sound and aren't dangerous for work indoors but if you want to use them away from power source you'd have to connect them with a generator.
With diesel or petrol you're not restricted with the distance, nor do you require a generator, however due to the carbon monoxide emissions, you can't use them indoors, and they require more maintenance over time.
