Boxing Tips: How To Wrap Your Hands The Right Way

Your hands are your most important “tool” in boxing. Also, your hands are most exposed to risk of injuries during boxing. In fact, there are many small bones and joints in your hands that can get easily broken as a result of the heavy hits and the resistance of the bag. For this reason, protecting your hands while boxing is a must.

You might think that choosing the right pair of boxing gloves is a guarantee for high level of protection. Wrong. If you think so, you are probably a newbie in this sport discipline. Every experienced boxer knows that the right hand protection starts with wrapping the hands with special hand wraps for boxing.

By wrapping your hands the right way, you add additional support and protection to the bones, tendons, joints and muscles in your hands during all the movements, including the most intensive ones. In addition here's a simple guide on how to wrap your hands properly with hand wraps for boxing.

  • Step One: Stretch your hand and spread your fingers as wide as possible. Most of the hand wraps have a hole at one of the ends. This hole is meant to place your thumb through it. So, the first step in wrapping and fastening your hand is placing your thumb through the hole of the wrap.
  • Step Two: Wrap your wrist. After you place your thumb in the hole, start wrapping your hand by wrapping your wrist, two to three times or more, depending on the stability you want to attain.
  • Step Three: Wrap your palm. Once you've wrapped your wrist, continue by wrapping your palm. Wrap your palm inasmuch times as you think that is necessary for achieving the desired strength and stability. When you are done make sure you end the wrap near the end of the wrap of your wrist.
  • Step Four: Wrap your fingers. Start the wrap from the inside of your wrist. First, make a ring wraps around your fingers and after that continue wrapping each finger separately.
  • Step Five: Wrap your hand once again until you spend the entire length of the wrap. After that secure the wrap and perform some test punches to make sure that your wrap is comfortable. Testing the hand wraps for boxing is important because in this way you will ensure that the wrap is not loose nor too tight.
