Starting your first dance lessons is a thrilling and exciting thing. You are about to become a young dancer and learn various skills and movements. However, dancing isn't a joke and it requires dedication, determination and great love it. Your dance classes aren't time off when you get to have fun with friends. During this time you will learn new movements, ways to carry your body and to remain disciplined. So, you shouldn't be surprised to learn that every dance studio has its own dress code. You can't just show up in class wearing sweatpants. The best dance clothes for young dancers are dance shorts; this piece of cloth allows you to remain focus on the movements instead to get distracted by the fabric.

And maybe you don't like the idea, but here is why dance shorts are important for young dancers.

Free Movement

When you start taking dance lessons, your legs shouldn't be burdened with clothes such as sweatpants, tights or leggings. Dance shorts are suitable for this activity because you will be free to move, jump, run and do whatever movement is necessary. Maybe hip-hop dance classes require you to wear loose-fitting plants, but if you are learning ballet dance or jazz dance, then definitely your first choice should be dance short shorts.

Your teacher will tell you the dress code and you should follow it. This isn't because your teacher simply loves for the students to wear these shorts; the shorts will allow you to repeat the movements, see your legs in the mirror and see other dancers' legs as well. Choosing clothes on your own can create chaos in the dance studio in a way that all students will not be able to learn the movements and the techniques properly and there are many cases where improper clothing lead to injuries.

No Distractions

Even the dancer who starts their first lesson, shouldn't have any distractions. Your jazz shorts will allow you to focus on what your teacher says and how to repeat the movement until it looks decent. Instead, to pull down the sweatpants or leggings, your clothes should not bother you at all. In fact, your dance shorts should be completely invisible to you. If every student wears dance shorts and you show up in sweatpants or yoga pants, you will instantly become a distraction to yourself, the others and the teacher as well. Keep in mind that even the wrong size could affect your entire class. The size of your jazz shorts must fit perfectly, so you don't even feel them while dancing. Young dancers are easily distracted, so the clothes shouldn't be the thing that will take away their attention.

Teacher Can See Leg Position

When starting your dance lessons you are completely new to the process. You don't know anything and you are there to learn. And your teacher must observe your movements, positioning and how if you're improving. Dance shorts are the ideal piece of dance clothes for this. The dancer's legs are bare so the teacher can observe them well. Any wrong movement or position that goes unnoticed by the teacher can easily lead to injury, and this is not something you want to happen.

Cohesiveness

Dance studios have dress codes since it helps dancers to look cohesive. This way they bond with each other. When all of the dancers wear the same type of clothes, it's much easier to see the group as a cohesive group; after all, you dance together in unison movements. When all students wear the same type of clothing, the teachers are able to see how their bodies move, but also the cohesiveness gives the students a better visualisation how the dance will look like. And when a group is cohesive, they have a better time working together to achieve the same goal.

When all students put on the same clothes, their mindset changes and they become one.

Focus Improvement

Although jazz dancers and ballet dancers seem like they do something very easy and they appear to be light as feathers on stage, they need immense focus and concentration when they dance. Every movement requires strength, focus and memory. When your clothes are distracting and not suitable for the class (and they are different from the rest of the group) the focus can be easily lost. This is why you can't choose to wear whatever you want. Younger dancers should wear suitable dance clothes that signal that they are ready for a structured class; after all, they come to the dance studio to learn, not to play and have fun. The dress code teaches the students that they should be disciplined and puts them in the right mindset to respect and listen to their teachers. After all, dancing isn't just a piece of cake; it takes dedication, time, discipline and following rules.
