New to the World of Gin? Tastes and Events to Take You for a Spin

So you used to think that nothing comes close to the rich world of taste wine and beer varieties offer, but then a friend poured you a glass of gin that made you curious? There's a lot more to gin than meets the eye, and this lovely spirit is certainly worth exploring.

Gin lovers around Australia have been enjoying its rich flavour and the unique twist of this classic spirit offered by producers. Being a gin lover also means a lot of fun, tasting and visiting new places. The following features can help you learn more about this drink and the upcoming fun events.

Why gin is so popular

Why Gin is so Popular

To say gin's popularity is booming in Australia might be an understatement. No doubt about it, Australia is very, very good at gin making. In the 1990s, you could only find one or two types of gin at a bottle. These days, Australian gin distilleries offer a wide range of locally made craft varieties, which also fill liquor cabinets at top restaurants and trendy, inner-city speakeasy bars. Aussie gins do taste unique and delicious. Bartenders love to use gin for making great cocktails. Gin is extremely versatile and a lot more fun to play with than vodka.

Most of the gin’s popularity is due to the versatility of the ingredients. With over 20,000 native plants that are indigenous to Australia, distillers can create gins with a true sense of place. This is why many gin makers decide to use the native botanicals particular to their state to create gins with a ‘terroir.’ Normally, Australian gins made using native ingredients tend to be full-flavoured with strong citrus notes. This is especially common when lemon myrtle is used, which is the highest natural source of citral.

Many distilleries find it natural to highlight the exciting grapes from their regions, such as Shiraz, Grenache or even Gewurztraminer. This feature is especially important for wine lovers and can help them easily fall in love with gin too. The flavour and viscosity provided by the grapes produce intriguing gins that are bursting with bright, fruit-driven flavours. Complemented by traditional gin flavours of juniper, cassia bark, coriander seeds and pepper berries, this type of gin is an absolute favourite.

Barrel-aged Gin

Barrel aging a gin

If you are into rich flavours, you might want to try barrel-aged gin. Barrel aging a gin gives it many of the classic aged spirit flavours that gin is not usually associated with, such as vanilla, caramel, oak, and smoke. Gin has a light body and doesn’t bring too many competing flavours to the table, which is why the woody nuttiness and barrel flavours can shine through. You can drink barrel-aged gin neat or over ice with an orange slice. It can also work well in cocktails.

Gin Distillery Tours

The explosion of gin distilling means there are more distilleries than ever before that offer the opportunity to meet the maker, taste the gin and maybe buy a bottle or two to take home with you. Most of the Australian gin distilleries can be visited and either run regular distillery tours or host private tours by appointment. The bars onsite offer a wide range of cocktails you can try and enjoy. Depending on the place you visit, there might be a where to grab a bite before you take a look at the shop full of ginny gifts. For those that are more curious, some gin distilleries even offer gin making classes. You can easily book a cocktail making class and learn how to mix gin with other drinks. In every scenario, fun is guaranteed.
