What's the Difference Between a Buffet, Sideboard, Server and Credenza

Although some of you consider being the same thing but known under different names, the truth is that there is a difference between a buffet, sideboard, server and credenza.  Usually, they can be placed in dining rooms, however, they can be found also in hallways, living rooms and even bedrooms, so if not knowing what to choose you must stock yourself with the basic info.


Sideboard

Sideboards are long furniture pieces with low storage space. The main thing that differs it from the other similar types of furniture pieces is its short legs. They can come in an array of styles and can have lots of features on them.  When placed in living rooms, sideboards can act as the ideal TV stand and one where you can store all the bits and bolts underneath, in its drawers. Sideboards can also find a place in hallways and can be adorned with some stylish and decorative accents like souvenirs, vases, family photos, etc. If having drawers, you can use sideboards for storing some files, documents, etc.

Buffets

According to interior designers, there is no significant difference between buffets and sideboards. Although there are some buffets with shorter legs, low and large storage space just like sideboards, usually they have higher legs, which in fact is the only difference between these two.  Generally speaking, a buffet cabinet can serve as a great dining room furniture piece, one on which you can place serving plates, silverware and linens Additionally, a buffet cabinet also allows for serving food and tea when having guests over.

Credenza

According to interior designers, credenza is a furniture piece that has no legs. This means that credenza's reach the floor, but to be honest, this was back in the past. Nowadays, you can see a large selection of modernized credenzas' with four legs, and sliding doors for easier access.

Server

Last but not least, servers are smaller, shorter and sleeker types of furniture pieces. When compared to the other types, they are considered as more formal and can complement any elegant, modern, contemporary and minimalist space.

Generally, all of these furniture pieces can come in a range of styles, colours, shapes, materials and styles, in order to meet the different users' needs and budgets. Wooden, metal or a wood-metal combo are just some of the many materials you can choose from, the key is to choose the one that can complement your space.
