What is a Medium and What to Expect From a Psychic Medium Reading?

A medium is a person with the ability to sense energies of other dimensions and communicate with spirits of people who have died. Mediums are usually called upon to help people who have some unresolved issues or questions for their loved ones who have passed away.

In both ancient times and modern times, a medium is considered as a bridge between the spirit world and ours. Mediums are also known as "channelers" because they "channel" communication from the dead to the living people. Mediums may use Tarot cards, crystal balls, palmistry, astrological charts or psychometric in order to facilitate communication with the spirits. They can hear or see the messages from the spirits through physical sensations and then they convey the messages to the living.

All mediums have psychic abilities which are very helpful when it comes to reading and conveying messages from the spirit world. Mediums can convey messages in many different ways. Some mediums may hear auditory messages or see actual images, while others receive intuitive information in which the messages would appear as mental impressions. Some mediums are completely awake during the session, while others may enter into a trance-like state while conveying the spiritual messages.

What is the difference between a medium and a psychic?

One of the most common questions people have about mediums is what are the differences between psychics and mediums. The term "psychic" is usually used for people who have psychic abilities and work in the paranormal field. We are well-aware of our five basic senses which are taste, sight, hearing, smell, and touch. However, we have another sense that is as real as the other five and this sense is known as our sixth sense or our gut feeling (intuition) that one cannot logically explain. Everyone of us is psychic to some degree, but not everyone can be a medium.

On the other hand, a medium is a person with psychic abilities who has fine-tuned their extrasensory perception and can communicate with spirits. Mediums have the power to feel and hear thoughts, voices, or mental impressions from the spirit world.

Mediumship can be broken down into two main categories: mental mediumship and physical mediumship.

Mental mediumship

Mental mediumship is one of the most common types of mediumship. This form of mediumship uses the intuitive mind and divides further into several types which are known as Clairsentience, Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Clairempathy, Clairgustance, Clairscent, and Clairtangency.

  • Clairsentience (clear feeling) is the ability to perceive information through strong, emphatic feelings from spirits.

  • Clairvoyance (clear vision) is the ability to see images of people, objects, symbols, scenes, or colors that are not visible to the naked eyes.

  • Clairaudience (clear hearing) is the ability to perceive sounds or words from sources broadcasting from the spirit world.

  • Clairempathy (clear emotion) is the ability to feel the attitude or the emotions of other people.

  • Clairgustance (clear tasting) is the ability to perceive the essence of a certain substance through taste from spirit.

  • Clairscent (clear smelling) is the ability to smell a certain odor or fragrance from the spirits.

  • Clairtangency (clear touching or psychometry) is the ability to receive information about someone just by holding a certain object or touching a specific area.

Physical mediumship

Physical mediumship differs from mental mediumship. In this type of mediumship, the physical body of the medium gets the information from the spirits, while in the mental mediumship only the mind of the medium is utilized.

The most common forms of physical mediumship are channeling and trance mediums. A trance medium is a person who goes into a trance state when they receive the messages from the spirit world.
